Cards vs cash
Malls, supermarkets, mid-range restaurants and 7-Eleven (from 200 THB) take cards. Markets, food stalls, longtails and small cafes are cash only. Foreign-card ATM withdrawals carry a fixed 220 THB fee plus your bank's charge — withdraw larger amounts less often.
Exchange
Exchange booths (SuperRich, the yellow Bangkok Bank kiosks) beat airport rates. Bring new, large USD/EUR notes for the best rate; old or small notes get worse rates. A Thai bank account with a PromptPay QR is a game-changer for long stays — but opening one now usually needs a longer-stay visa and a rental agreement.
Paying for a rental
We accept several payment methods and confirm them in the rental agreement before you pay — no need to juggle cash for a deposit. For day-to-day life, carry baht: Thailand is still a cash-first country outside the malls.
FAQ
Can I pay with card everywhere?
No — malls and mid-range venues yes, but markets, street food and taxis are cash. Always carry baht.
How much cash should I bring?
For two people over 10 days excluding accommodation, budget 25,000–40,000 THB for food, transport and trips.
Is tap water drinkable?
No — buy bottled (14–20 THB for a large bottle). Ice in cafes is factory-made and safe.
