Where to stay in Phuket for the first time: a decision guide
21 August 2026 · 5 min read
Choosing where to stay on an unknown 50-km island is a blind bet — unless you use combinations that are already proven to work.
The universal first-timer: Kata or Karon
The best debut balance: proper beaches, walkable infrastructure, calm but not boring, sane prices. An apartment in a pool complex 5–10 minutes from the sea runs 1,300–2,200 THB/night. From here the whole island is day-trippable.
If you want nightlife: Patong
Everything runs till morning and everything is walkable. Accept the noise and crowds — or take the northern edge (Kalim) and second-line streets for calmer sleep at lower prices.
If you want quiet: Nai Harn / Rawai
The island's south: a gorgeous bay, sunset viewpoints, the long-stay community's cafes and markets. Evenings are quiet — that's the feature.
Families: Bang Tao or Kata
Space, restaurants, gentle beach entries — cross-check the family beaches FAQ and the area guide.
Three rules of a first booking
- Going for 3+ weeks? Split the stay between two areas — you'll see two different islands for the same money
- A complex with a pool is non-negotiable in the tropics
- Book with a contract and free cancellation — the step-by-step guide; the catalogue works exactly like that
