An archipelago 40 km from Phuket, administratively part of Krabi. The star is Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh — the one from the film 'The Beach'. After years closed for coral recovery it's open again, but with limits: no swimming in the bay itself, boats moor on the other side.
Speedboats leave from Rawai and Chalong piers, ferries from Rassada. A speedboat takes about an hour. Group day tours with lunch and snorkelling run 1,200–2,500 THB; a private boat from 12,000 THB.
Tips
- •Take a tour that leaves at 6:30 — the crowd difference is huge
- •Reef-safe sunscreen only; the regular kind may be refused at the park
- •Take a seasickness pill beforehand — open sea gets rough by speedboat
