Elephant Sanctuaries, Phuket

Ethical sanctuaries where you feed and bathe elephants instead of riding them — the top family activity on Phuket.

1,500–3,500 THB per person2–4 hours

Phuket has several sanctuaries that take in elephants from tourist riding and logging. The format is similar: a guided visit, feeding bananas and sugar cane, and bathing the elephants in a mud pool and lake. Ethical places do not offer riding — a key sign when choosing.

The main sanctuaries are around Chalong and on the road to Kathu, 20–40 minutes from the southern beaches. Book ahead: groups are small and sell out days in advance in high season.

Tips

  • Take a morning slot: it's cooler and the elephants stay in shade later
  • Wear clothes you don't mind ruining for the bathing part
  • A truly ethical place has no riding seats, no trick shows and no chained, bare concrete pens
