The historic centre of the island's capital, built in the 19th century by Chinese tin-mining families. Thalang, Dibuk, Phang Nga and Krabi streets are rows of pastel two-storey shophouses now full of cafes, galleries, bars and small museums.
Walk Thalang with detours into the street-art lanes, visit Jui Tui temple and the Khao Rang viewpoint. On Sundays from 4 p.m., Thalang closes for the Lard Yai market — street food, music and crafts, the week's main event.

- •The island's cheapest, best food is here: a local meal is 60–100 THB
- •Park on the side streets; the centre has almost no spaces by day
